Personality and Photography

With so many new photographers popping up in every town across the county it’s hard to know how to stand out.

Even if you have great photography, a good website, you have spent time and money on marketing your business and you are getting calls and enquiries about your services you still need to do the most important part and that is book the weddings.

Most couples will want to meet several photographers when looking for someone to cover there wedding, often they would have already done lots of research and picked photographers who’s style they like. All the photographers they meet may have great portfolios, quality albums, and similar prices so what is it that going to secure you the booking over the competition.

The answer is simple, you are.

Just think this is the most important day of your client’s life and they will be spending it with the photographer in tow for the entire day. So building a relationship with their photographer could be the most important decision they make. That’s why it is important you let your personality shine. It takes a certain type of person to be a wedding photographer and no matter how good your photography may be if you do not have the people skills you simply will not get the bookings.

There has to be a balance to how you act, A bride is not going t to want you being rude or bossy to there wedding guest but a shrinking violate simply wont be able to take control of the wedding when needed. The key to any wedding should be fun. If you can you a fun, chatty and polite person and build and instant friendship with the couple and there family your sure to get the job.

Face to face meetings are a great opportunity to build this relationship. Do not see them as an opportunity to make as much money as possible and pressure the client into a sale, talk about more than just photography and show genuine interest in the couples personality. Don’t forget getting to know the couple will not only help them pick there photographer but will also help you provide them photography that meets there style. Do not rush this meeting, I have had some meetings take up to 3 hours simply because we got into the conversation and drifted off subject several times.

While your focus should always be on your photography skills and style the power of personality is more than you can imagine. People like to do business with people and clients can always be friends.
